A long, long time ago, I used to get road rage. Not super road rage where I would get out the car, but I wouldn’t hesitate to use the full breadth of my vocabulary when somebody was frustratin me in traffic. My then-girlfriend broke me of the habit by imploring me to, instead of using the pejorative du jour, call the offending driver a — get this — “person.” I don’t know what her actual intent was; I think she just wanted me to stop cussin so much. The net effect, however, was that I got a lot less stressed when driving. That’s not to say that I never get frustrated, cuz it’s still plenty of fools out there who don’t deserve their drivers licenses, but calling them ‘person’ instead of ‘fool’ or ‘knucklehead’ or some of the more uhhh… colorful names seems to work really well for me.

  1. When I feel my annoyance rising, I try to remind myself that driving is a skill, and some people just don’t do it well. Also, the DMV is revenue collector, not a bad driver screen. The more drivers there are, the more cars are on the road, therefore the more revenue for the state.

I do think there needs to be a higher level license to drive on the freeway and and entry gate at each on ramp that you have to swipe your ID to pass.
