Although I’m not one to revel in anybody’s misfortunes, I think there’s something…ironic (?) about the passing of Jesse Helms on July 4th. Perhaps it’s because as much as he signifies traditional conservatism to white conservatives, he represents a whole lot more to me. And in his case, that’s not a good thing. At all.
May his soul rest in peace.

Very well said, and your succinctness says volumes.
I’m with you - what he represented was not a good thing, at all. CNN, and others, may call him a ‘conservative icon’, but I think they’re being overly generous. I’m a ‘C’onservative, and white, and have always cringed when any mention of the guy hit the airwaves.
I’m sure he was a generally kind man, and I hope that he rests in peace, too, but I’m glad that the old-guard is disappearing.
