Recognize!
Posted in Everwhatever on March 1st, 2008I went to the National Portrait Gallery to see the Recognize exhibit today. It was pretty much what I would’ve expected from a hip-hop exhibit at the Smithsonian, with a few graffiti pieces, some video, and some traditional portraits. All of it was good, but the paintings by Kehinde Wiley were particularly stunning. Especially the painting of Big Daddy Kane. First of all, the physical size is imposing — it’s about 8′ X 6′. But it’s KANE. It’s SO Kane. And really, the portraits of LL and Ice-T are, I think, based on classic portraits, but that Kane…pssshhhh. The question I find myself asking is whether the picture seemed more live to me because Kane as an MC is more live.
