Too bad when I saw him earlier in the year he played the laziest, most uninspired set with mainly thugish 90’s.
No real vinyl(Serato) and he actually did a couple of on screen mixes.
I know he still has the goods, but just a off night and my loss.
Seemed like he just wanted to get in,get the money and get out.
Only about 20 seconds worth of transforming.
No educating the crowd, just playing to the lowest denominator, playing it safe.
Cash Money just pulled ahead in my books.
I’ve asked many rappers and producers who was the best (and none hesitated or even bothered to name a second best). The answer I got? Capri? Alert? Biz? Nope- to a man, they said Jazz was the king.
My all-time favorite DJ! No one can do it better… his presentation, selection, skill-set, humility, and intensity far outshines every other DJ-performer out there. He keeps it close to the ORIGINS of the art form while displaying the latest innovations on the scene. I think they call that ACCESSIBILITY!!! Too many DJ’s try to intimidate with excessive scratching and overly-complicated performances. You can showcase your talent AND educating the audience while keeping it appealing to the novices in the room. And I say that as a DJ that is 15 years DEEP in the game!
As a working DJ that’s 20+ (more than jus knee deep) years into the game I know what to expect from Mr.Townes or anyone else, legend or otherwise and I know he can still destroy a crowd without pulling a single trick outta the bag.
I have seen what he can do,but that night saw what he couldn’t be bothered to do.
I’m not saying he’s weak, just his performance and lack of energy the last time I saw him.
Everyone has off nights and he was switched off and thinking about getting back home after 3 back to back tours.
That and the Left coast selection of 90’s thuggin’ from a East coast Philly legend was out of character as well.
I was not going to see Turntablism 101,as you say, for DMC that’s interesting, but a club only a few minutes worth is enough.
What I’m saying is I saw Jeff up in the club, but didn’t hear him that night.

Or maybe he just doesn’t like Canadian’s.LOL
Your checklist for what makes him the one with “The Glow” is exactly what was missing that night.
His presentation, selection, skill-set, humility, and intensity were all elsewhere.
