August 12 is the day that Edison invented the phonograph. To commemorate, we celebrate Vinyl Record Day. Well, maybe not “we,” but I sho’ nuff do. And there are lots of other bloggers who do too. At The Hits Just Keep On Comin’, there’s a list of blogs who are commemorating the day. Those of you who still spin wax, join with us as we keep the funk alive.

For my own part, I’m gonna celebrate by heading down to the flea market at the Gallaudet University Parking Lot with a fist of dough and coming back with a rack of records. I’m also gonna stop being lazy and convert some of these songs to mp3. Cuz really, while it’s important to recognize the past, it’s also just as important to live in the present with an eye towards the future. So yeah. I’m convertin’ em to mp3. Which means that by the end of the day, I’ll finally have cracked 10000 songs on my ipod.

UPDATE
So i went to the flea market. Copped a tub of records (somewhere between 60 and 75) for $20, and then at other stands, I came UP, copping among others:

- Trouble Man Soundtrack by Marvin Gaye
- It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back (I now have this on all 4 formats)
- Fat Boys
- The Show b/w La-Di-Da-Di - Doug E Fresh, f. MC Ricky D (I been had this, but my copy was dirty. Not even dirty. Dutty.)
- Claudine Soundtrack - Gladys Knight & The Pips
- Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome - Parliament. (the record wasn’t in there, but the comic was!)

I haven’t even really examined the tub, but there’s a clean Songs In the Key Of Life, and several Ray Charles and Count Basie records in there, along with some records by groups I should have but never really put any priority on getting, like Maze and Teddy P.
