Cobb’s taking nominations for the 100 greatest funk songs of all time. He’s gonna post the list on 16 June. I threw a couple suggestions in the comments, but they were all relatively standard fare. I’ma lay low and see what other people put up before I go diggin’ all deep in the crates and whatnot. But stop by there and add in.

  1. I included Whodini (5 minutes of Funk, Big Mouth, Funky Beat), because most of their stuff was not sampled. There were a few “jazz-fusion” musicians who dabbled in funk, too.

  2. To me, funk is about the bass and drums, with a brass accent.

But a cut doesn’t have to have all three elements to be funky. Sometimes the base is funky all by itself. And of course, keyboards/synthesizers can be every instrument, and the funk can flow from there, too.
