I gloated about buying it over on my blog, but seriously, you gotta check this out.

I feel like I’m overwhelmed already, and I’ve only managed to listen to the first disc so far. Luckily, there’s three more :)

I got that piece. It’s STRONG. I already had a good smattering of the cuts, but there’s some good stuff in there. I was geeked up when I saw it too. Soul Finger by the Bar-Kays? That’s been one of my favorite songs since, like, 8th grade. Bangin!

The book that comes along with the set is almost worth the price alone! Oddly enough, I read a review the other day in which the reviewer said something to the effect of “I could go my entire life without ever hearing ‘Soul Finger’ by the Bar-Kays again.” Can’t say I agree, but I do question the wisdom of putting on Curtis’ “If There’s a Hell Below…” on there. I mean, who doesn’t already have that song?

I picked up this nice out-of-print Chicago soul box set a few weeks back, too. The liner notes aren’t anything to speak of, but where the hell else are you gonna hear some random Jackie Wilson, Chi-Lites and a host of people who never made it (Barbara Acklin singing “Bake Me a Man” comes to mind…) all thrown together?
