Read full description of the books The Sound and the Furry:Humor in SF/fantasy is difficult. I say this after having read a number of works that have attempted it. Often the jokes fall flat, or are quickly dated.
Having said that, this collection by Anderson and Dickson is a true classic. This is at least the third time I've reread the short stories in this collection, and the second time I've read the novella "Star Prince Charlie" also included in the book. While there is some datedness in the tropes, the effect is that it reflects old school space opera, rather than really taking the reader out of the story.
I'm convinced that the Star Trek (original series) episode "A Piece of the Action" was at least influenced by this series of stories, if not directly inspired by it.
This collection suffers from a number of typographical errors and does not include the original illustrations, which served to enhance the tone of the stories.
I used to want to see a film version of the Hoka stories, but now I'm not convinced it would work. However, I'd love to see a graphic novel version.
In short, this is well worth the read, and a true classic of SFC humor.
